EXCLUSIVE REPORT: Three Bergen County police officers were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for evaluation after a scuffle with an adult special services student in Teterboro this afternoon.
Bilal Diggs, 18, was charged with assault on a police officer following the 1 p.m. incident at the North Street School, Anthony Cureton of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office said.
“The young man was unresponsive on a medical call but then became responsive,” Cureton told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “As the officers tried to get him under control, he assaulted them.”
All of the Bureau of Police Services officers sustained minor injuries, he said.
According to its website, the North Street campus “provides educational services for classified students who have not been successful in their district high school.
“Students attending this program are classified as emotionally disabled, oppositional defiant or one of the other educational classifications,” it says. “As a result of their exhibited behaviors they require a smaller setting in a structured learning environment allowing them to recognize the necessity of taking ownership for their behaviors.
“It is the goal of the program to guide the student in developing more appropriate behavior modification skills, therefore allowing them to attend a less restrictive environment. The less restrictive environment could be a program provided by Bergen County Special Services or returning to their district high school.
“Throughout the school year, socialization trips are provided for students who have exhibited appropriate behavior or growth resulting in improved behavior. These trips are designed to assist the student in recognizing that appropriate behavior results in a positive experience. Students will attend trips ranging from the Liberty Science center, bowling, David [and] Busters, horseback riding and skiing.”
