UPDATE: A state DOT worker on a litter cleanup detail had both arms and legs broken, among other serious injuries, after being struck and pinned this morning on eastbound Route 80 in Saddle Brook near the Elmwood Park border, authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Carmine DeSomma, 28, of Lodi was undergoing a brain scan at Hackensack University Medical Center following the 10:35 a.m. crash, a family member told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“We’re all praying,” she said.

The driver also was hospitalized after the eastbound four-door sedan hit and pinned DeSomma on a bridge spanning railroad lines and Midland Avenue just before Exit 62.

DeSomma, a former borough Housing Authority employee and the nephew of former Lodi Mayor Thomas DeSomma, was freed by responders and taken by Saddle Brook ambulance to HUMC.

New Jersey State Police were handling the investigation.
