YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Paterson ex-con had a loaded handgun in his glove compartment when he was stopped for having tinted windows and no headlight on his car, Paramus police said this afternoon.
Born Graham, 27, refused permission to search the car to Officer Jon Umanzor, who stopped the white 2006 Chevy Impala on Route 4 west near Forest Avenue, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
Umanzor became suspicious after smelling raw marijuana, the chief said, so he summoned a K-9 narcotics team from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.
The dog “made several positive indications on the vehicle,” but officers couldn’t get a consent from Graham, so they impounded the car and obtained a warrant.
“Located in the glove box of the Impala was a loaded 9 millimeter Glock 17 handgun,” Ehrenberg said. No pot was discovered, he said.
Graham turned himself in, was booked and then was released on $25,000 bail.
He is charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, felon in possession of a handgun and possession of a large-capacity handgun magazine, the chief said.
