YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Elmwood Park police last night arrested a trio of out-of-towners in separate traffic stops after finding them carrying heroin.

Nicholas Austeri, 28, of Lodi, and Sarah Link, 27, of Hawthorne, had 60 bags when they were approached in the KMart parking lot on Broadway at 10:20 p.m., Police Chief Michael Foligno said this morning.

Both were charged with possession of the drug and of drug paraphernalia.

Two hours earlier, officers arrested 50-year-old John Drozdik of Saddle Brook after stopping him on eastbound Route 46 and finding 10 bags of heroin, the chief said.

He was charged with criminal possession and issued several summonses, including for having drugs in a car.

All three were released without bail pending Municipal Court appearances.

Paralyzed Fort Lee driver in fatal Ridgefield DWI crash released without bail

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Paralyzed over half of his body and confined to a wheelchair for life, a 20-year-old Fort Lee man who authorities said was drunk last summer when his speeding Honda Civic slammed into a Ridgefield building, killing one of his passengers, was released without bail after being discharged from a rehabilitation facility, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

Tamer M. Ammar isn’t considered a flight risk from charges of vehicular homicide while DWI and reckless endangerment, a judge ruled on Tuesday.

He also agreed that the cost of incarcerating Ammar until a trial or plea would have been exorbitant, given his medical needs. Bail is set to ensure a defendant shows up for court.

Last year, a shoplifting defendant with cancer who was initially ordered held on $15,000 bail was released from the Bergen County Jail after authorities reported that her chemotherapy treatments were costing $40,000 a year.

Speaking generally, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT: “When people in the jail have medical issues, taxpayers have to pay for that.”

Many doubted that Ammar would survive injuries that included bleeding of the brain following the pre-dawn July 24 crash near the Ridgefield circle.

He was in a coma for months, confined to a hospital bed at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, before being transferred to the rehab center.

Authorities said he was speeding when he lost control of his 2014 Civic as it headed north on Broad Avenue toward the circle the night of the crash. After barreling through bus-stop signs and into oncoming traffic over a stretch of nearly a quarter-mile, the car slammed into the side of an accounting business at the circle.

Killed was fellow Fort Lee High School athlete Miles Reme, 20. Injured was another 20-year-old FLHS graduate, James Racanelli. Ammar is a former high school football player, while Reme played baseball and Racanelli wrestled.

Besides the DWI death by auto and reckless endangerment counts, Ammar was issued several summonses for, among other offenses, DWI, reckless driving, careless driving, driving over the sidewalk and failing to keep right.

State Motor Vehicle Commission records show that Ammar was ticketed nearly two years ago for DUI in Fairview, leading to a seven-month driver’s license suspension.

He also has charges on his record for reckless driving, in Virginia, for prescription drug distribution, in Connecticut, and for marijuana distribution in 2013 out of Fort Lee (which resulted in the mugshot above).

A lawsuit filed by Racanelli’s family in September contends that Ammar’s father should have known of his son’s DWI and criminal history when he gave him the car that night.

Homeless man, 18, charged in 10 Englewood burglaries, eyed in Bergenfield, Teaneck break-ins

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Englewood detectives arrested an 18-year-old homeless man at the local library yesterday in connection with 10 commercial burglaries in the city and four others in Bergenfield and Teaneck the past two months.

Tyron Jamil Thompson also was charged with conspiring to burglarize a West Palisade Avenue wireless store in Englewood.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Despite a report on another media site, Thompson as of 8:30 p.m. was officially charged only with the Englewood incidents and was being investigated by detectives from the other town towns — both of whom said they expected to serve charges on him at the jail soon.)

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification matched a fingerprint lifted after a Jan. 16 burglary attempt at a Depot Square fitness center to Thompson.

At the same time, city Detective Barry Miller developed evidence tying Thompson to a North Dean Street ice cream store break-in last Thursday in which $400 was taken from the cash register thanks a key stolen from an employee.

Early yesterday, Detective Sgt. Chris Kedersha and Detective Chris Quirk spotted Thompson at the Englewood Library on Engle Street and arrested him without incident, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

He was carrying “a significant amount of foreign currency” Torell said.

Detective Mike Chapman joined Miller and Quirk in interviewing Thompson, leading to several burglary and conspiracy charges.

The foreign currency and other evidence linked Thompson to four more commercial burglaries in Bergenfield and Teaneck, Torell said.

“Detectives from those towns were notified and their investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thompson remained held on $100,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

“This arrest was the result of great detective work and should be good news to our small business owners in the city and surrounding areas,” Englewood Police Chief Lawrence Suffern said.

“We would urge businesses to avoid keeping ‘starting money’ in their locations overnight and to have air-conditioners professionally and securely installed,” the chief added.

Air conditioners were pushed in during four of the break-ins: at an East Palisade Avenue applicance store on Dec. 20 in which $100 in coins was taken, at a Grand Avenue restaurant in which $200 in cash was swiped from a tip jar, at an Engle Street shoemaker’s where $150 was taken from the register — both on Jan. 22 — and at a Bergen Street variety store early yesterday where nothing was reported taken.

Rear windows were broken at other area businesses — including a West Palisade Avenue Chinese restaurant that reported $100 in coins missing on Jan. 16 and an East Palisade Avenue dry cleaners where $200 in cash was taken five days later.

Torell said Thompson broke into the dry cleaners for a second time early yesterday but “because of the prior burglary, no cash was kept in the store and there was nothing else taken.”

Thompson also broke a glass pane to get into a Grand Avenue gas station, but Torell said it couldn’t be determined what, if anything, was taken.

Hudson man charged with molesting older Fair Lawn woman, having sex with Hasbrouck Heights girl, 15

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Union City man already accused of stalking, molesting and threatening to kill a woman 17 years older than him was arrested on charges of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

George E. Bolzoni, 27, was free on bail after Delaware State Police said they caught him with more than 10 pounds of marijuana in his car trunk last month when detectives grabbed him on statutory rape charges Monday after interviewing the girl, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said this morning.

Bolzoni, of 43rd Street, was indicted just last week on charges of grabbing a 44-year-old Fair Lawn woman’s vagina “over her clothes to degrade or humiliate [her] for sexual gratification” last Oct. 28. It says he also stalked and threatened to kill her.

This time, authorities said, he had sex with the underage teen in a car in Hasbrouck Heights and in Wood-Ridge in late December.

“The victim disclosed what had occurred to her parents, who brought her to Hackensack University Medical Center for a sexual assault examination,” Molinelli said today.

Hasbrouck Heights police were notified, as was the prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit. Members of both then interviewed her at Molinelli’s Paramus office before arresting Bolzoni.

He remained held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with two counts of sexual assault and two of child endangerment.

Bolzoni was arraigned on the Hasbrouck Heights charge in Municipal Court there on Monday. An arraignment in Wood-Ridge was scheduled for next Thursday.

Bolzoni, who Molinelli said is single and unemployed, was graduated from Weehawken High School and studied physical education at Kean University.

The pending indictment charges him with “attempted significant bodily injury” to the woman “under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life,” court records in Hackensack show.

It also alleges that Bolzoni threatened to kill her “under circumstances reasonably causing her to believe the immediacy of the threat and the likelihood that it will be carried out,” and that he “engaged in a course of conduct directed at [her], which would reasonably cause her to fear for her safety or the safety or another.”

Bolzoni was awaiting trial on the charges when Delaware State Police said they stopped his Chevy Malibu the night of Jan. 30 in Laurel.

After getting his consent to search the car, they said, they found the pot in nine vacuum-sealed packages labeled “Grand Daddy” and divided into a trio of sealed cardboard mailing boxes.

Bolzoni later posted $20,500 bail and was released from the Sussex Correctional Institution.

ANOTHER CVP SCOOP: Oakland police investigating a home break-in found eight pounds of pot, a “sizable” amount of cash and packaging materials, leading to charges against both the alleged burglars and the tenant — who was being held on $300,000 bail.

Darren Richardson, 31, who lives in the Jerome Avenue home, fled the state before charges were filed last month but turned himself in this week, Lt. Christian Eldridge told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

Responding to a burglary-in-progress the afternoon of Jan. 16, Officer Ryan O’Keefe caught 19-year-old Shaina Harris climbing through a basement window, Eldridge said.

Moments later, Sgt. Keith Sanzari and Ptl. Keith Docwra grabbed Zacahary Coombs, 18, on Ramapo Terrace, he said.

The Haskell couple posted bail (Coombs 10% of $15,000 and Harris 10% of $10,000) and were released.

Meanwhile, the smell of raw marijuana at the burglarized house led to a warranted search by Detectives Mark Piercy and Ed McDermott, along with members of the Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 and Criminal Identification units, Eldridge said.

Richardson, after surrendering on Tuesday, was charged with operating a drug facility, distributing marijuana, possessing the drug and possessing property from criminal activity.

Records show a previous arrest history for Richardson, including for marijuana possession in Riverdale and Pompton Lakes in 2011 and robbery in Elmwood Park in 2002. He also sued Pompton Lakes police after they tore apart his car looking for marijuana that they said wasn’t found. The charge was reduced to a disorderly offense.

Assisting in the investigation and ensuing arrests were Eldridge, Sgt. Tim Keenan and several officers.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Two young women survived with relatively minor back and neck injuries this morning after their SUV hit a snowbank and went airborne off the side of a Route 80 bridge in Hackensack, landing 40 feet from the river.

The Toyota Rav-4 was headed east on the highway when another vehicle cut them off around 7;10 a.m., Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“As they swerved to get out of the way, they hit the snow embankment along the guard rail,” Mordaga said.

The snow, plowed against the guard rail after the recent storms, “acted as a kind of ramp,” he said.

“It basically sent their car airborne off the highway,” Mordaga said.

The car plummeted nearly 60 feet, landing in the Ever-Ready oil lot near the Hackensack River off South River Street.

Responding instantly, Hackensack firefighters removed both doors and the roof, talking with both victims through the process, Hackensack Fire Lt. Justin Derevyanik said.

Both were out in 20 minutes, he said.

An ambulance took them to Hackensack University Medical Center, where they were listed in fair condition this afternoon.

“Miraculously, they just have minor injuries,” Mordaga said.

Bergen County Police and the Oradell Fire Department dive teams were initially requested because of the nature of the call but were returned.

New Jersey State Police were investigating.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Garfield man who authorities said raped a woman while she slept in his apartment after the two hung out earlier that night was indicted by a grand jury in Hackensack.

The four-count indictment charges Adam Niemira, 28, with first-degree aggravated sexual assault for having forced intercourse with and fondling the breasts of a victim whom he “knew or should have known was physically helpless, mentally defective or mentally incapacitated” last Aug. 15.

The 26-year-old woman told authorities that she awoke in Niemira’s second-floor Woods Street apartment to find him “engaging her in sexual intercourse,” Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said following the arrest.

“The victim struggled briefly [before] leaving the residence and returning home,” the prosecutor said.

She called Garfield police, who notified Molinelli’s Special Victims Unit. Together they interviewed the woman, who the prosecutor said “provided details of what had occurred and stated that she had not consented to engaging in any type of sexual activity” with Niemara.

Niemira, who is single and unemployed, remained held on $150,000 bail this morning in the Bergen County Jail.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Hasbrouck Heights police took two men and a 16-year-old boy into custody and seized more than an ounce and a half of pot, nearly a dozen sheets of LSD and small amounts of mushrooms and prescription pills after a patrol officer witnessed a drug deal.

Officer Brad Dussault pulled over a 2013 Toyota on Boulevard and Columbus Avenue just after 8 p.m. last Saturday after witnessing a drug deal, Detective Lt. Michael Colaneri told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Spotting drug paraphernalia out in the open, he sought consent to search the car, but the driver refused, Colaneri said.

So the car was impounded and the trio was released, he said.

A Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 unit dog indicated drugs and detectives obtained a search warrant, the lieutenant said.

Besides the drugs, they found packaging materials, scales and other paraphernalia, he said.

Warrants were issued and arrests were made Monday.

Joshua Swift, 20, of Elmwood Park (above, left), and Evan C. Gobrili, 21, of Rutherford (right), were being held on $35,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail.

Hackensack man charged with claiming to be twin to duck traffic tickets in Maywood, Rochelle Park

$

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Hackensack man was being bars today after authorities said he repeatedly tried to duck traffic tickets in both Maywood and Rochelle Park by claimed to be his non-existent twin brother — and legally blind.

Maywood Police Officer Matthew Parodi stopped 58-year-old Olawale Agoro in Maywood last July 31 and issused him five summonses — including for driving an uninsured vehicle while on the suspended list.

At his Municipal Court appearance, Agoro told the judge that he wasn’t driving because he’s legally blind and that his twin brother was using his name, Maywood Police Chief David Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning. The case was temporarily suspended.

Parodi, after noting that Agoro walked around the courtroom and read paperwork without any trouble, watched him leave court and approach several people in the parking lot, Pegg said.

One of them drove Agoro’s car out of the parking lot, after which Parodi “watched him get into the driver’s seat and drive away,” the chief said.

So Parodi followed Agoro and pulled him over in Rochelle Park for equipment violations.

“At first he told the officer he couldn’t drive because he was blind,” Pegg said, “but he later recanted.”

Rochelle Park police impounded the vehicle and issued him two more summonses.

Agoro later went to Rochelle Park Municipal Court and got a postponement of his court date there, Police Chief Robert Flannelly told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

After not showing up on the new date, Agoro returned twice, each time claiming to be his twin brother, Tony, Flannelly said.

“Agoro pleaded with court clerks in an attempt to acquire adjournments so that his twin brother could return from Nigeria, where he was mouring the death of their father,” the chief said.

After getting two more postponements, Agoro skipped court on Wednesday. An arrest warrant was issued.

Agoro showed up at Municipal Court again yesterday, claiming to be the non-existent brother, Flannelly said.

A court clerk — having been tipped off by Parodi — quickly summoned police.

Detective James DePreta and Patrol Officer Ken Stapleton questioned Agoro, who was unable to produce any form of identification, the chief said.

They then got a state Motor Vehicle Commision photo that showed an identical birthmark near his lip to one Agoro has, he said.

After initially resisting arrest, Agoro was taken into custody, Flannelly said.

A fingerprint scan further confirmed that “Tony Agoro” doesn’t exist, he said.

Agoro remained held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail this morning, charged with hindering, resisting and false swearing.

“This is just another example of the extremes people will go to escape justice,” Flannelly said.

A drunk driver backed her car into an Elmwood Park police cruiser at a red light on Route 46 and then tried taking off before the officer chased her down, authorities said.

Officer Michael Goldyn was stopped behind 21-year-old Keisanna Franceis of Paterson when her car hit his, Police Chief Michael Foligno said.

She then took off on eastbound Route 46, he said.

Goldyn pursued her a quarter-mile and pulled her over, the chief said.

Because a local police vehicle was involved, the Bergen County Police Department was contacted to investigate.

The BCPD charged Franceis with DWI.

Elmwood Park police unsafe and careless driving, failing to maintain lane, not wearing a seatbelt and leaving the scene of an accident.

Goldyn was fine and the cruiser had moderate damage to the front bumper, Foligno said.

Fairview police find 2 women headed to methadone clinic with loaded gun, pot after crash

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Fairview police investigating a crash involving two women headed to a New York City methadone clinic said they found the driver under the influence of some type of drug and her passenger reaching into her purse, where she had a loaded .25-caliber handgun.

Sgt. Joseph Bucco stopped both cars after a witness flagged him down following the crash at Fairview and Bergenwood avenues just before noon yesterday.

The driver of a 2001 Mercedes, 35-year-old Angela Vazquez of Palisades Park (above left), was apparently under the influence, Deputy Police Chief Martin Kahn said.

Officer Theresa Demuro noticed her passenger, Nancy Arroyo-Florez, 46, of Hoboken (right) clutching her purse, Kahn said,

“She began making abrupt movements to conceal the contents, then opened her purse to reach inside,” he said. “We don’t know if there was any intention to grab the weapon or dump the contents, but the officer saw her movements and was quick to stop anything from happening.”

A check determined that the Raven handgun wasn’t defaced or reported stolen, police said. Sgt. John Pierotti, a drug recognition expert, determined that both were under the influence. Blood tests will determine exactly what.

Arroyo-Florez was charged with two illegal weapons possession counts, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of the drug. She was being held on $125,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

Vazquez was charged with the same possession, paraphernalia and influence offenses. She remained held on $35,000 bail.

Both are due for first appearances Wednesday in Municipal Court.
