Grand jury charges Passaic man with Valentine’s Day sex abuse of Garfield girl, 9

ONLY ON CVP: A year ago today, a Passaic man sexually assaulted a 9-year-old Garfield girl, an indictment returned in Hackensack this week charges.

Jaime Vazquez, 35, had the girl touch his penis on Valentine’s Day 2014, the indictment alleges.

The girl told her mother what allegedly occurred and they went to Garfield police, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.

Detectives from the prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit interviewed the girl “at a children’s advocacy center in the state where the victim and her family now reside,” Molinelli said last summer.

During the interview, the girl “provided specific details describing how she was sexually assaulted on one occasion by Vazquez, who was in a relationship with a relative of the victim at that time,” he said.

Vazquez posted $150,000 bail — after a judge reduced it from $200,000 — and was released from the Bergen County Jail two weeks after his July 31 arrest

The indictment also charges him impairing the morals of a minor.

Madeline Hirsch and Damar F. Palmer, both 27 of Englewood, followed instructions to move a bag of crack cocaine that police said 26-year-old Michael “Mook” Williamson stashed while being chased by police investigating the May 2 shooting, according to an indictment returned this week.

Police found the cocaine but not the gun that they said Williamson used after he was ejected from the game in a Cleveland Street basement. The shooter fired several times but missed his target, they said.

City investigators chased Williamson down three days later after they said he dashed through a backyard and hopped a fence after bailing from a car he was driving on Pindle Avenue.

After obtaining a search warrant for the car, police said they found a loaded .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun that wasn’t used in the shooting on Cleveland Street.

Besides attempted murder, the eight-count indictment returned by a grand jury in Hackensack charges Williamson with various drug and weapons offenses, as well as eluding and disposing of evidence.

Williamson remained held on $250,000 bail today — down from an original $1 million — in the Bergen County Jail. Hirsch and Palmer remained free without bail.

UPDATE: An 86-year-old woman jumped to her death from the 9th floor of a Fort Lee luxury high-rise yesterday as a police officer watched from below.

The first responding officers at the River Ridge apartments at 200 Old Palisade Road were met just after 1:30 p.m. by her husband, who told them his wife “had locked herself in her apartment after he had left to get their vehicle,” Detective Capt. Stanley Zon said.

“Emergency Services officers made a forced entry into the apartment and found the bedroom window open,” Zon said.

By then, she’d already jumped.

Another officer “witnessed the victim falling from the window,” the captain said.

An ambulance and paramedics were summoned to the high-rise (the former primary address of Jay Z and Beyonce), followed by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Detectives are currently conducting a follow-up investigation as standard routine procedure,” Zon said. “The husband continues to assist with the investigation.”

Lyndhurst woman, 55, charged in Backpage.com prostitution sting

BEYOND BERGEN: A 55-year-old Lyndhurst woman was snared in a prostitution sting that produced several arrests after detectives in Morris County set up “dates” with escorts through Backpage.com ads over the course of two days.

It began with the mid-January discovery of a 27-year-old Columbus, OH woman wanted on a prostitution warrant out of Guttenberg who Chester Borough police said was sleeping in a car parked behind a local business.

Detective Shaun Horst investigated and found that the woman, identified as Raquel Castillo, had posted an escort ad on Backpage.com.

So he called posing as a customer, got a price and had Castillo taken into custody when she showed up for the appointment.

While being questioned, Castillo identified an alleged john she said she’d been with that night — 58-year-old Michael McSherry of Jenks, OK, Horst said.

Posing as a female escort, Horst texted McSherry and arranged a meeting. A female police officer played the role, discussed money and arrested McSherry — who promptly gave up his area address book, the detective said..

Police Chief David J. Jara and Horst began running the numbers and found that all of the escorts had Backpage ads.

The resulting sting led to six arrests:

Vivian Albanese of Lyndhurst was charged with prostitution;

Jamie Lynn Brown, 35, of Pine Hill was charged with prostitution;

Lara C Chavarria, 31, of Newark was charged with prostitution; a passenger, 24-year-old Ashley N Perdomo of Newark was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia and with being under the influence of durgs;

Courtney A Robinson, 23, of North Plainfield was charged with prostitution; her driver, 23-year-old Kian Bond of Plainfield was charged with driving while suspended and had an outstanding warrant out of Plainfield;

All were released on court summonses.

Horst said the women also “were given information on social services and help groups throughout the state.”

None said they were involved in human trafficking or were being held against their will or forced to turn tricks, he added.

Hasbrouck Heights police storm hotel room, arrest two after fire, brawl

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Two East Orange men trashed a Hasbrouck Heights hotel room, set a small fire in the bathroom and broke a window, forcing police to ram their way in around 5 a.m., authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning .

One of the men was hospitalized and the other was in custody at headquarters as detectives drew up charges and tried to determine what prompted the incident.

A Bergen County Police Department officer also was treated for a hand injury, they said.

Officers responding to the 4:47 a.m. call of a disturbance at the Hilton tried to get in after smelling smoke, but the door was locked and a desk and dresser were against it, Detective Lt. Michael Colaneri told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Members of the Bergen County SWAT team were en route when the occupants broke a window, he said.

Afraid that the man who broke it might jump, officers rammed their way into the room and grabbed both men.

A toilet paper fire in the bathroom was quickly snuffed.

“We’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened — whether these guys were under the influence of PCP or some kind of drug or what,” Colaneri said. “At one point, they were fighting each other.

“The room was destroyed.”

Derrick Ellis, 53, of East Orange, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries sustained in the fracas.

Milton Hinton, 59, of Montclair, was still at headquarters this morning as detectives drew up charges against both.

These included charging them with arson, criminal mischief, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Bail was set at $50,000 each.

Smoke alarms save Lyndhurst family in basement fire

$

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Smoke alarms got a Lyndhurst family out of their home and a water pipe that burst in the heat acted as a sprinkler, limiting the damage, after what began as a basement electrical socket fire.

“In this case working Smoke detectors truly saved lives,” Lyndhurst Fire Chief Paul Haggerty Jr. told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

Firefighters from Lyndhurst and North Arlington who responded with police to the 4:23 a.m. Fourth Street alarm were met with heavy smoke at the front door. They quickly doused the flames.

A clothes dryer connected to the socket with an extension cord apparently was the cause, authorities said.

North Arlington’s F.A.S.T. team responded, while Rutherford had a pumper on standby.

“Damage to the residence could have been much worse if not for the fact that the intense heat caused a copper water pipe to separate, burst and almost act as a sprinkler, helping to keep the fire at-bay prior to fire department arrival,” Police Capt. John Valente said this morning.

“All the residents of the one family home were evacuated safely and will be temporarily housed with family members” while contractors repaired the utilities, he said. “No injuries were reported.”

Allendale heroin addict arrested three times in less than 48 hours — twice in Ramsey, once in Ho-Ho-Kus

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 44-year-old heroin addict from Allendale was found carrying 19 folds of the drug along with a dozen suboxone tabs and a Zolpidem pill when he went to Ramsey police headquarters to pick up his truck after crashing it while under the influence the night before — the second of three arrests for him in less than 48 hours.

Witnesses on Friday night told officers responding to the 9 p.m. crash in the parking of the Bottle King on northbound Route 17 that the silver Ford pickup driven by Thomas Reilly had been weaving along the northbound highway moments earlier.

Reilly “was incoherent and did not respond properly to officers questions,” Police Chief Bryan Gurney said this morning.

Given his impairment and possible injuries, a paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital was summoned, the chief said.

“They reported that Reilly had constricted pupils and believed that he may [have been] under the influence of an opiate-based substance,” Gurney said.

Police found several syringes sticking from a backpack in the truck, he said, adding that officers also found four empty heroin folds in the bag.

Reilly was hospitalized and blood samples were taken before he was released with a court summons on charges of DWI, driving while under the influence of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Just after 11 a.m. Saturday, Reilly went to headquarters to be processed and retrieve his truck.

While fingerprinting and photographing him, the officers searched Reilly, as is standard procedure.

The found the heroin and pills inside his jacket, Gurney said.

This led to addition charges of possession of heroin and the other two drugs.

After being released a second time, Reilly was again picked up on drug possession charges yesterday after being stopped yesterday.

He remained held on $7,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

He’s due in Ramsey Municipal Court a week from tomorrow.

Family hopes someone spots missing Upper Saddle River bearded collie

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? The search continued tonight for a 9-year-old bearded collie from Upper Saddle River named Madison after several sightings in and around Woodcliff Lake.

Madison, who’s been missing since Friday, is white, black and gray, about 50 pounds and in perfectly good health.

But beware: Although one of five well-trained champion dogs owned by John and Leslie Cosares, “she’s the only one of the group who’s skittish, even at home,” their daughter, Justine, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.

“If she doesn’t know you, she’ll run,” she said. “So please don’t chase her.”

The Cosareses were about to board Madison with a nearby veterinarian before heading to a trade show in Las Vegas when she bolted.

Since then, their daughter has been posting fliers and contacting police and fire departments and animal shelters and hospitals. Meanwhile, a groundswell of Facebook support continued to expand — friends and strangers alike have been posting fliers at vets and elsewhere while sharing online links and tips.

One idea that Justine Cosares was considering was taking one of her parents’ other beardies out and around.

“It’s like a needle in a haystack right now, so it’s worth a try,” she said tonight. “We’re hoping someone can find her.”

If you see Madison and/or can get hold of her, call Justine Cosares: (347) 840-0200

Indictment charges one with punching, spitting blood at Teaneck officer, other with exposing himself at headquarters

EXCLUSIVE: A Teaneck man exposed himself to a female police lieutenant and another punched her and spit blood at two other officers, an indictment returned by a grand jury in Hackensack alleges.

Jason Nayyer Siraj (above, left) and Julian K. Furlonge (right), both 24, were combative from the moment officers stopped a car they were in as it emerged from a Beverly Road municipal parking lot the night of Oct. 12, police said.

The officers were responding to various reports of a suspicious vehicle and a man standing in the middle of Beverly Road trying to stop cars.

They arrested the driver on charges of DWI and marijuana possession and grabbed both Furlonge and Siraj after they refused to cooperate, Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

At one point, Furlonge swung his hand and hit a female officer in the face, authorities allege.

The driver was released on a summons, but Furlonge and Siraj continued battling with police at headquarters, he said.

Furlonge spit blood at two officers, while Siraj “intentionally exposed his penis and [was] touching or stroking [it] while yelling expletives” at a ranking female officer while making vulgar comments, the indictment returned earlier this month charges.

Siraj also threatened three other officers, it says.

The indictment charges Siraj with criminal sexual contact and two counts of threatening to assault police. He also was issued a summons for marijuana possession, records show.

Furlonge, meanwhile, is charged with two separate counts of assault on a police officer, as well as resisting.

Both were released from the Bergen County Jail hours later — Furlonge on $10,000 bail and Siraj on $7,500, records show.

3 years in prison for Clifton man who resold $275,000 worth of stolen items online

$

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A year to the day that detectives arrested him, a 49-year-old father of nine — and grandfather of seven — was sentenced in Hackensack today to three years in state prison for buying $275,000 worth of stolen coffee makers and other appliances that he resold on eBay, Amazon and elsewhere.

Abraham Baruchov, of Clifton, took a plea in December under which he agreed to repay JC Penney for the stolen products. State authorities previously seized $223,000 in cash and bank accounts that will go toward that amount, acting state Attorney General John J. Hoffman said.

In return for his plea, state prosecutors dropped fencing charges against his wife.

Baruchov, who sobbed and covered his face with his hand to avoid being photographed, asked Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi: “Have mercy on me, and sentence me for the minimum that can be done.”

Bergen County Sheriff’s officers later handcuffed him and brought him to the Bergen County Jail, where he was being held this evening.

Under state parole guidelines, Baruchov could be released before this Thanksgiving.

Baruchov two months ago admitted receiving the more than 1,400 items of merchandise from January 2013 through February 2014 that others bought online with bogus credit cards from a wholesaler who has since vanished.

These included Keurig and Cuisinart coffee makers that were shipped by JC Penney “to addresses used by Baruchov” or “directly to his online customers,” Hoffman said.

JC Penney referred the case to the Division of Criminal Justice after its investigators traced stolen goods to Baruchov, he said.

“The huge volume of online commerce being conducted by major retailers and by individuals who use consumer-to-consumer services has spawned a new breed of criminals who capitalize on the anonymity of the Internet,” Hoffman said. “Baruchov was selling stolen appliances to purchasers he never met, in some cases without ever laying his hands on the merchandise.”

DCJ detectives arrested Baruchov a year ago today on charges including receiving stolen property, fencing and money laundering.

The lead investigator was Detective Abraham Aquino of the Division of Criminal Justice Financial & Computer Crimes Bureau. Deputy Attorneys General Janet R. Bosi and Naju Lathia prosecuted the case and took the guilty plea today for the Division of Criminal Justice.

“If you encounter someone selling brand new products on the Internet at well below market prices, that should raise a red flag,” Division of Criminal Justice Director Elie Honig said.

Hackensack home health care aide from Fort Lee agrees to four years in prison for Medicaid fraud

$

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Fort Lee home health care aide working for a Hackensack-based agency admitted today that he billed Medicaid for services he didn’t provide during a period when he was working another job — or out of the country.

Elhan Gurban, 52, agreed to pay $64,125 in restitution as part of his deal with state prosecutors in exchange for a four-year prison sentence.

Gurban, who originally was charged with 45 counts of health care claims fraud and one count each of Medicaid fraud and theft by deception, was a certified homemaker home health aide at Confident Care Corporation, which has 10 satellite offices throughout New Jersey, as well as offices in Florida.

He is one of six people associated with Confident Care to be charged by the state Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor for scamming Medicaid.

The others:

• Naum Lavnevich, 57, of Oakland, pleaded guilty in January to health care claims fraud, admitting that between January 2008 and October 2010 he filed 178 Medicaid claims for $5,614 worth of subsidized services that weren’t provided. His sentencing is scheduled for April 10;

• Anatoli Rountsev, 52, of Totowa, pleaded guilty in December 2014 to one count of health care claims fraud, admitting that between June 2008 and June 2009 he filed 463 false Medicaid claims that paid out $12,598. His sentencing is scheduled for March 27;

• Vladimir Faerman, 66, of Hawthorne, was charged in October 2014 with 175 counts of health care claims fraud, along with theft by deception and Medicaid fraud. Faerman — the brother of renowed Russian classical pianist Mikhail Faerman, is accused of submitting $87,616.23 in fraudulent claims to Medicaid for work he never completed;

• Roman Abashkin, 32, of Wayne, was charged in July 2014 with 24 counts of health care claims fraud and one count each of Medicaid fraud and theft by deception after authorities said he submitted 212 fraudulent claims for which Medicaid paid out $6,664;

• Semen Rybalov, 68, of Wayne, was charged in July 2014 with 15 counts of health care claims fraud and one count each of Medicaid fraud and theft by deception. Rybalov filed 45 false claims to Medicaid, which paid out $2,180, a state indictment alleges.

Another indictment says Gurban filed 1,413 false claims with Medicaid for services between January 2008 and October 2012 for services that he didn’t provide.

As a result, Medicaid paid out $64,125 on hundreds of claims filed while Gurban “was actually out of the country or at another, unrelated job,” Attorney General John J. Hoffman said.

Deputy Attorney General Jordan Mamorsky presented the case to the state grand jury. Detective Kylie Mattis and Analyst B’leia Williams coordinated the investigation.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Liberian national swiped more than $100,000 from the bank accounts of several small business owners in Bergen County through an elaborate scheme before a group of law enforcement agencies combined to bring him down, authorities announced this afternoon.

Miokar B. Molinelli said detectives from his White Collar Crimes Unit teamed up with police from Fairview and Hillside (in Union County) and the Bergen County Police Department, as well as the FBI and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, to nab Wehye after an investigation that lasted nearly a year.

Wehye, who lives with his common-law wife in Hillside, remained held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with computer-related theft, theft by deception and fraudulent distribution of personal identifying information of another.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A former Lyndhurst elementary school PTA president wrote 27 checks against the organization’s account for nearly $10,000 in amounts ranging from $80 to $1,000, an indictment returned by a grand jury in Hackensack alleges.

Jeneen Gino also submitted “inaccurate” financial reports in an attempt “to deceive the association and PTA Treasurer Giuseppa Held,” and “executed a Certificate of Liability insurance from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. that was fraudulent,” the 32-count indictment charges.

Gino signed other people’s names on the unauthorized Jefferson School Parent Teacher Association checks over the course of more than 3½ years between January 2010 and late September 2013, when she was arrested by Lyndhurst police detectives, the indictment alleges.

The total: $9,860.

The checks were written at various intervals, including three totaling $500 that were cashed in a 10-day stretch in February 2012, it says.

Three checks were written for $1,000, one for $840, another for $800 and a fourth for $700, the indictment charges.

The rest were in amounts ranging from $80 to $500, it says.

Gino originally was arrested in April 2013 after police said she was caught on camera taking $160 from a Lyndhurst Little League concession stand.

She resigned as the Jefferson School PTA president, pleaded guilty to a theft charge and paid restitution and court fees, records show.

The organization then reviewed its books and found discrepancies, police said.

Subpoenas were issued to banks and then search warrants for Gino’s home, where authorities said important documents were found that helped secure the case.

Gino remains free on $10,000 bail.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A drunk driver from Emerson took off after being stopped by a Paramus police officer on Route 17 overnight, then crashed his car into a divider and fought with officers who took him into custody, authorities said.

Kenneth McKersie, 31, was taken into by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash before being transferred to the Bergen County Jail.

A judge set bail at $50,000 on charges of DWI, eluding and resisting, as well as for driving with a suspended license.

McKersie’s 1996 four-door red Mercury had been swerving across three northbound lanes when Paramus Police Officer Matthew McGuire pulled him over near A&S Drive around 2:20 a.m., Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

McGuire could tell instantly as he approached the car that McKersie was drunk, the chief said.

They were talking when McKersie “suddenly put the vehicle in drive and sped away on Route 17 north,” Ehrenberg said.

The Mercury crashed moments later near Sheridan Avenue, he said.

Backup officers from Paramus and Waldwick helped subdue the combative McKersie.
